Originally I went to Banff to paint clouds. But on the beautiful, blue-skied day drive there, I was entranced by the sharp, bare peaks of the mountains and the stunning turquoise of the Bow River, fresh from the glaciers. I began this fascination by taking a ton of pictures, followed by some frustrating experimentation until arriving at a fairly paired back depiction of the magnificent rivers and peaks of Banff. I was surprised, and continue to be tickled, at just how effective this simpler approach (single or limited colour palette combined with repetitive line work). The pieces somehow capture part of the mystical and confounding aspect of nature that awes and humbles us every time.
