I had the great pleasure of being an artist in residence at the Caetani Cultural Centre in Vernon, BC. Although I have a studio in my home, I needed something a bit bigger in May.
It was a great way to work through a bunch of ideas and bodies of work quickly and simultaneously. As you can see below, I like to hang everything I'm working on. This allows me to be working on something else but still have things in my periphery making it much easier to bounce from piece to piece, series to series.
This body of work is a reworking of some canvases that focused on water. The addition of brightly coloured abstract elements is changing this body of work completely - it's much more playful now.
The small painted collages on the right are a continuation of the larger paper collages I started in March - pictured here, the blue horizontal stripes on the bottom right.
Here's more of those small painted collages in process. I make painted backgrounds and then compose cut up painted pieces on them to create new compositions and vignettes.
Another one of the larger paper collages I started in March, as well as smaller works in graphite and goauche, where I'm playing with the reflective quality of the graphite against the gouache grounds. Still haven't quite worked out the best kinds of colour / grounds combination.
The studios at the Caetani Cultural Centre are in amongst stunning grounds. Right out this window there is a beautiful pond where new water lilies were popping up every day.
